Years ago, my grams had to be taken to the emergency room. Whenever this happened, my family showed up in en masse. I’m sure we were every ER’s worst nightmare though I think we did a good job of staying out of the staff’s way.
As we were waiting for updates or the chance to head back and see her, I saw a woman come in alone, tears clinging to her eyes. She was there for her mother, and she was all alone. I was blessed to be surrounded by my parents, siblings, an aunt, and uncles.
I watched the woman for a little bit, sizing up the situation and debating whether my next move would be welcomed. Ultimately, I decided to get up and offer to sit with her for a bit. She gratefully accepted, clutching my hand with one of hers as she cried into a tissue with the other.
Soon she was able to go back to be with her mom but she thanked me for sitting with her. I returned to my family and we were ushered back shortly after to be with my grams.
